American actress and singer, Doris Day reportedly died in her California home at the age of 97.
She starred in 39 feature films that were released between the years 1948-1968. She started her career as a singer and gained huge success with her first hit, “Sentimental Journey” back in 1945 which sold over 5,000,000+ copies worldwide. She has also given multiple platinum singles and has recorded over 650 solo recordings as a singer making her one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th Century.
Doris Day retired from acting back in 1973 after her TV series, “The Doris Day Show” completed five seasons. She also happened to be an outspoken animal rights activist and kept herself busy overseeing two animal welfare groups.
In 2004, Day was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed in a statement that she had died on Monday at her home in Carmel Valley, California.
“(She was) in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia. She was surrounded by a few close friends as she passed”.
