The Pros and Cons of Owning A Smart Phone

The Pros and Cons of Owning A Smart PhoneSmart phones have now become a staple in today’s households, whether they are Orange or Vodafone sim only deals everyone has one. We all know they’re fun to have, but the question remains – is your smart phone good for you? Most proponents of smart phones find that although they are handy, they aren’t necessary to one’s lifestyle.

First, we’ll talk cons. From a financial perspective, smart phones can be pricey investments. With so many new features and data usage skyrocketing, costs have risen. Most companies feature packages starting anywhere from $65 a month to an average of $85 or more. Most American households have a regular land line phone, so the added cost of owning an expensive smart phone will detract from your budget.

Another very serious drawback to owning a smart phone is the temptation to use it while driving. Many people will often use their phones to not only talk but text, look for directions, or read email while driving. Many states have strict laws prohibiting distracted driving that bring hefty fines, not to mention the potential safety hazard this poses.

However it can’t be denied that smart phones are helpful and have come to change the face of technology as we know it today. Although there are plenty of novelty applications (or “apps”) created for games and puzzles, there are many apps that can be extremely useful in day to day life.

For instance, there are apps one can download to manage a shopping list, count calories for dieting, and look up recipes when cooking. There are apps to help manage your money and banking, and apps that will look up coupons, movie times, restaurants, and music. Applications that download feeds of news reports from different websites are also especially popular. There are also apps that combine social networking such as Facebook and Twitter into one streamlined application.

Many smart phones now also come equipped with some type of GPS or map coordinate system, which allows the user to get directions easily at the click of a button and can replace the need for a regular hand held or car windshield mounted GPS.

All smart phones have the capability of text messaging, which many people find a more convenient and cheaper way to communicate than talking and using minutes.

In either case, although a smart phone may not be a priority for certain lifestyles, it can certainly make communicating on a day to day basis fun and informative.
