To maintain the price of Roti – Naan, Prime Minister Imran had ordered to rescind the gas tariff revision. In the line with the given order, the ECC (Economic Coordination Committee) has taken back the said revision for non-commercial tandoors (roti – naan shops), to eventually reduce the price of roti – naan.

The decision was made in a meeting chaired by Finance Adviser Abdul Hafeez Shaikh. According to the decision, which was proposed by the Ministry of Energy, the pre-June tariff will be resumed and the government will make good the loss to the gas companies by granting a subsidy of 1.51 billion rupees. The gas tariff was revised on 30th June, according to which the monthly bill for special commercial consumers (roti tandoor) with consumption up to 3Hm3 was sharply raised by 168.36% in accordance with the domestic slab. After the tariff revision, the naan price was sharply raised from 8 – 10 rupees to 12 – 15 rupees. Naan is a vital part of the food, significantly raised the cost of food for a layman.

To ensure the wise usage of the tariff, a detailed survey will be done across the nation to identify the application of the discounted tariff. Under the decision, only small tandoors, using non-commercial connections would be allowed to take the benefit, and any hotel or restaurant having a commercial connection would be billed with the new increased tariff.

The meeting discussed the sudden price increment identified by the prime minister and ensured to provide relief to the masses. The commission also suggested the provincial bodies to regularly check the market prices of commodities, to see if they are in accordance with the government’s stated prices. The committee will also go through a review on the said decision to ensure that the benefit provided to tandoors is conveyed down to the end consumer.
