74th UNGA Session – Turkish and US presidents discuss bilateral relations

Trump and Erdogan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Sept 22 discussed bilateral relations and regional issues with his US counterpart Donald Trump.

Erdoğan and Trump spoke over the phone, according to the sources from the Republic of Turkey Directorate of Communications.

Earlier on Sunday, Erdogan also hosted South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham at Peninsula Hotel.

President Erdoğan on Sept 21 reached New York to attend the 74th session of UN General Assembly.

Earlier, Erdoğan said he would address international peace and security issues at the UN General Assembly on the first day of the General Debate on Sept 24.

The UN general assembly is the world’s parliament, where all the UN’s 193 member states are represented. Each sovereign state gets only one vote so it is not exactly representative of the world’s population but its votes do not sustain the membership, except in budgetary matters.

The general assembly is not exactly as powerful as the security council, which can pass binding resolutions, and is dominated by the five permanent members, the US, China, the UK, France, and Russia, who each have a veto, a constitutional right to reject a decision or proposal made by a lawmaking body.

But the general assembly can express world opinion, forward recommendations to the security council and elect the council’s non-permanent members. The 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA-74) has opened on 17 September 2019. The first day of the high-level General Debate will be Tuesday, 24 September 2019.

The veto power originates in Article 27 of the United Nations Charter, which states, “Each member of the Security Council shall have a vote. Decisions of the Security Council on procedural matters shall be made by an affirmative vote of five members.”
