Special Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Gujranwala has extended the judicial remand of Hafiz Saeed for 14 days as per the latest order. The decision was made by Honorable Judge Syed Imran Ali to further allow the Counter-Terrorism Department to proceed with the ongoing investigation against him. On the event, court premises ware highly guarded with Anti-Riot Force, Elite Force, and Dolphin Force to counter any adverse situation by the supporters of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD).
Saeed was arrested on 17 July and was moved to Kot Lakhpat Jail after the court had granted a 7-day judicial remand. CTD had initiated the action against him over his alleged involvement in terror financing. Along with him, Naib Emir Abdul Rehman Makki, and 11 others were also arrested by the CTD. The banned Jud was believed to be operating activities by collecting funds from Dawatul Irshad Trust, Moaz Bin Jabal Trust, Al Anfaal Trust, Al Madina Foundation Trust and Alhamd Trust to finance terrorism. His arrest was also appreciated by US President Donald Trump via twitter.
Hafiz Saeed was blamed to be the mastermind behind the brutal attacks on Mumbai, India back in 2008 which took 166 lives and injured thousands. He also has a bounty of 10 million USD on his head.
The Concerned authorities are diligently working and making every possible action to curb the issues related to terror financing, to eventually meet the targets of the FATF compliance list, so that Pakistan can exit the ‘grey list’. In line with the above, the Federal Investigative Agency (FIA) has also established a compliance unit to ensure the timely completion of requirements of the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) action plan. The unit will work under counterterrorism wing of the agency and 11 officers have already been transferred with immediate effect to work under the unit.
