No girl is born in three months in 132 villages of India – A Gender Biased Country

Government record revealed that not a single girl was born in 132 villages in the last three months and officials in a northern state of India are investigating whether sex-biased abortions have been conducted or it’s just a coincidence.

Last week’s official statistics revealed that 947 children were born across 500 villages of Uttarakhand state. Among the 200 such births belong to 132 villages, none was a female child.

The Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district administration has declared those 132 villages a “red zone” and a team of 25 officials has been tasked to investigate this alarming matter.

“Of the 132 villages surveyed, 82 showed a higher rate of deliveries, so we will investigate those villages first,” Uttarkashi’s District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan told Qatar based news agency.

“As of now, we cannot confirm whether any female feticide had happened in these villages,” he added.

Uttarakhand’s Minister of Women and Child Welfare, Rekha Arya has asked for a report from the district authorities.

“A team of officials will look into the matter to see whether any forced miscarriages or abortions were done there,” she said.

India outlawed the selective abortion of female fetuses in 1994 but the practice remained to continue in a poor country where parents often regard boys as revenue-generating machines and girls as costly liabilities.

Gender bias kills more than 200,000 girls in India every year and experts declared India, a country with enormously disturbed and increasing ratio of men to women and more than 63 million females are “statistically missing” across the country, likely because of abnormally high female mortality rate.

The researchers collected mortality record from 46 countries with no sign of gender bias to estimate the impact of strangely enormous female mortality rate in India at the district level.
