Sony to reportedly join race of developing foldable smartphone, impinging Samsung and Huawei
Foldable devices were yet to be a virtual concept, but some of the biggest tech companies in the world seem determined to turn them into a reality.
Sony is going to develop its own foldable smartphone that could be released at the end of 2019 or early 2020, according to gadgets leaker “Max J,” who has leaked news of upcoming devices on Twitter. “Sony is working on a competitor to the Galaxy Fold and Mate X”, He tweeted.
If the leaked information becomes true, Sony would be sharing a table with some of the biggest mobile tech companies working to introduce devices with foldable displays, including Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo.
Samsung and Huawei alone are the top of global smartphone market shareholders, according to Statista. As the number of companies developing devices with foldable screens increases, the concept of foldable screens will become more necessary as a future style of smartphones’ display. As Microsoft, LG, and Lenovo are also rumored to be developing devices with a foldable screen.
Combined with the ultra-fast 5G mobile networks, foldable devices that can offer larger screens in the relatively small and portable form will have the chance to become more useful than the traditional smartphones. With the option for a larger display in a portable form, foldable devices can become more versatile, especially for purposes. They can display multiple apps more comfortably on a larger screen than traditional smartphones.
Galaxy Fold of Samsung have faced issues when the display broke, and Huawei’s Mate X foldable smartphone is facing an uncertain future as the company is restricted from using Google’s Android mobile operating system in new products after the company being blacklisted by the United States. Although, the US recently eased restrictions on Huawei, a lot of uncertainty still amidst the situation.
