Shakib al-Hasan enlisted his name on the elite list of cricketers, crossing 6000 plus runs and taking 250 wickets in the game’s ODI format.
Not only did Shakib become the fastest player to achieve the double of 250 wickets and 5000 ODI runs during the match between Bangladesh and South Africa. Shakib batted and bowled again in Cardiff on Monday to help Bangladesh defeat the West Indies at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. He led his side with an unbeaten 124 * knock on a good 322 chase against West Indies.
The 32-year-old Shakib (124 off 99 balls) created a batting master class as he led to a popular victory for Bangladesh, hunting down the 322 targets with 8.3 overs to spare. He also took 2 wickets during the West Indies innings for 54 runs while bowling.
Also, Liton Das played a large role in the victory as he remained not out on 94 off just 69 balls in a brilliant batting show. He hit four sixes and eight fours in his knock.
Shakib’s 124 not out, his 9th ODI century, was stuttered with 16 fours. He also achieved the personal milestone in his 202nd innings of scoring 6000 ODI runs in the process. After the 121 against England for a losing cause in Cardiff on Jun 8, this was his second century in this World Cup.
For Bangladesh, three wickets were taken by Mohammad Saifuddin (3/72) and Mustafizur Rahman (3/59), while Shakib Al Hasan (2/54) took two. Earlier, in the first powerplay with the Bangladesh pacers bowling in tandem, West Indies lost Chris Gayle (0) early and could manage only 32 runs.
Lewis and Hope then brought up the team hundred in 22.4 overs. Then the left opener exploded, knocking consecutive fours off Shakib before sending one out of the park in his next over from the bowler. But Shakib came back to dismiss Lewis, having caught him long-off as West Indies fell for 122/2.
That brought Hetmyer to the crease, and in his 26-ball whirlwind innings, he took the Bangladesh bowlers to the cleaners, smashing four boundaries and three sixes.
Once Hetmyer had returned to the shed, Captain Jason Holder shot 33 off 15 balls with the help of four hits to the fence and two sixes to maintain runs flowing, but West Indies lost their way after being dismissed in the 44th over.
