Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. In Delhi, which is known as the rape capital of India among Indians too, 4 to 5 women are raped every day. According to its own Government agency, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). NCRB’s annual reports claim 25,000 plus rape cases that are reported across India but activists say this figure is the tip of the iceberg as the number of cases that remain unregistered due to the fear of society, is still unknown.

India is also ranked as the most dangerous country for women, according to the survey of global experts for three issues.

1. The risks women face sexual violence and harassment.

2. The threat from cultural and traditional practices.

3. The risk of human trafficking including forced labor, sex slavery, and domestic servitude.

Recently, Indian police have taken into custody six men on July 19 after a Russian tourist girl was allegedly drugged and gang-raped in a popular southern tourist town of Tiruvannamalai. The woman is treated in hospital for a drug overdose and minor injuries, with efforts being made to record her statement.

“Six men have been detained over the rape and drugging of the woman,” an investigating officer told media. The medical report has proved sexual assault, the officer confirmed.

The woman, who was traveling solo, had arrived in the Tamil Nadu state during her tour.

Media reported that the 21-year-old had bite marks on her face and arms when she was found naked and unconscious on the floor of her hostel room.

Several foreign tourists have also been sexually assaulted in India in recent history. Last month a Japanese tourist was raped by a taxi driver in the northern town of India, followed by the rape of a 20-year-old Canadian tourist by her guest house owner in Delhi.

The country’s dire record on sexual violence has been in the global spotlight since 2012 gang-rape and murder of a woman in New Delhi bus.
