With a predicted $60 million opening weekend, Universal’s “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” is speeding up to No. 1 at the domestic box office.
After gaining $23.7 million in ticket sales on Friday, the film is now on par with early projections, putting it above weekend holdovers “The Lion King” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” An opening of $60 million marks one of the smallest starting points for a “Fast & Furious” entry, but it would be the largest opening for a domestic movie outside Disney and Marvel this summer, overtaking “John Wick: Chapter 3” which opened with $56.8 million.
The spinoff of Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham fared even better abroad, reaching $90 million in ticket sales on Friday for a predicted worldwide $120 million coming Sunday. The film will open at No. 1 in 53 different markets if estimates hold, with an opening still to come in China. That would be the largest worldwide opening outside the original “Fast and Furious” franchise for either of the film’s stars.

With an audience rating of 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, “Hobbs & Shaw” is also opening up large with moviegoers, probably helped by its all-star cast that comprises Idris Elba, Helen Mirren and Vanessa Kirby as well as Johnson and Statham who reprise their Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw characters.
“The Lion King,” comes at No. 2. On Friday, the Disney blockbuster took another $11 million and is eyeing a weekend finish of $37.8 million. A few days after it exceeded $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales, the new figures should position the live-action reboot as the 21st highest domestic performer of all time.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” gained an additional $5.6 million in domestic ticket sales on Friday for a predicted $19.3 million weekend end showing amazing figures this weekend. If estimates hold, after ten days in cinemas, the movie should end up with about $78 million.
Rounding out the top five is “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” which gained $2.2 million for an estimated weekend finish of $7.6 million, and “Toy Story 4” which brought home about $2 million on the way to a $6.9 million finish on Sunday.
