60 mm Rain in Karachi left question mark on city’s infrastructure

Nine people have died due to electric shocks after heavy rainfall in Karachi since Monday morning.

According to sources, two children died due to electrocution in Malir. Another two people were killed due to electrocution after rain in the Paposh Nagar area, while the other casualties took place in Defense, Clifton, and Gulistan-e-Jauhar.

The continued rainfall, which initially started with drizzling as early as 5:00 AM, remained to continue till dark, with heavy rainfall later, throughout the day in different areas of the metropolitan city.

The highest level of rainfall, 60 mm, was recorded at Saddar, while Surjani Town received 50mm, Faisal Base area 45mm, North Karachi 42mm, and Nazimabad 39mm of rain, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

The Met Office forecasted widespread rains and wind-thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls in Karachi and other parts of Sindh on Tuesday as well and the on-going monsoon system is expected to exit on Wednesday with not much probability of further raining during the first week of August.

Educational institutions will remain closed on Tuesday

The Sindh education department announced that schools, colleges, universities, and all educational institutions in Karachi will remain closed on Tuesday.

Examinations scheduled at the Karachi University including the NED University of Engineering and Technology, and the Federal Urdu University are postponed and new dates for the examination would be announced soon, according to administrative departments of said campuses.

Power Failure in a metropolitan city.

After an event in the early morning, around 400 feeders of the Karachi-Electric (KE) power supply co. tripped while power supply to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board was maintained, according to the K. Electric spokesperson.
