Mureed Abbas, a news anchor affiliated with Bol News, was killed along with his friend Khizar at a cafe on Khyaban-e-Bukhari commercial area. Police said that a shooter identified as Atif Zaman burst fire at the journalist from a white-colored car.
His body was taken to Jinnah hospital, where Executive Director of Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Seemin Jamali confirmed that Abbas had been brought dead to the hospital. She said that the anchorperson had multiple bullet wounds on the chest and abdomen.
Abbas died on the spot after being shot while his friend Khizar, surrendered to his injuries during treatment at a nearby hospital. According to SSP the alleged killer Zaman later committed suicide at his flat after shooting down Abbas and Khizar.
The police official said that Zaman and Abbas were linked with a business dispute. Mureed’s wife, who is also a TV anchor, revealed that her husband invested 5 million Rs in Zaman’s tyre business and was later asked him to return his investment.
“We invested our money in a business and the man was not returning our money,” she said. “His name is Atif Zaman,” she said. “I am sure he killed my husband,” she added.
Abbas’s wife told the reporters in the hospital that her husband received a call at 8:05 pm after which he said that he was going to collect money.
Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kaleem Imam took notice of the incident and directed the concerned Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to form a special team and put forward a report. He directed the concerned officials to conduct a forensic test of the evidence collected from the crime scene.
Police have launched an investigation and statements of eyewitnesses are being recorded. The CCTV cameras in the area will also be checked, police said.
