Netflix Show ‘One day at a time’ is renewed for a fourth season

The fourth season of One day at a Time is coming to Pop TV after Netflix canceled the beloved sitcom.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix’s much loved but little-watched (or so Netflix claims) sitcom One Day at a Time was revived on Pop TV for season 4. One Day at a Time Season 4 features 13 episodes and will be premiered on Pop TV, a niche cable network that sometime in 2020 will air Schitt’s Creek in the U.S.

Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce’s, Norman Lear-produced sitcom followed a multigenerational Cuban-American family through their daily triumphs, struggles, and laughter. One Day at a Time was noteworthy for using the antiquated multi-camera format to feature a family rare to television. It was canceled after its third season on Netflix.

In the streaming era, as is often the case, fans immediately picked up the banner to rescue the show and send it elsewhere. It seemed like salvation would be especially unlikely as the producer of the show, Sony Pictures Television, had limits on its Netflix agreement that stopped the show from shifting to another streaming service.

Ultimately, One Day at a Time could survive to see another day by completely bypassing the streaming world. Pop TV belongs to CBS Corp. With shows like Florida Girls and the Anna Paquin-starring Flack, the new cable network has been delving into original content.

Sony will take over the Netflix series syndication and global rights and will also broadcast it on CBS later in 2020. Interestingly, while those seasons stay on Netflix, the Pop TV will be able to air reruns of the first three seasons. It’s a close to an unprecedented agreement in the streaming world, with only the Comedy Central agreement of BoJack Horseman coming close.

Regardless of the machinations behind the scenes of the network, the significant thing now is that One Day at a Time is back and that Lin-Manuel Miranda is very pleased.
