e-Syndicate ICC World Cup 2019 Review – England vs Bangladesh

In today’s match at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, Bangladesh received a whopping 106-run defeat from England. Bangladesh was only able to handle 280 in 48.5 overs in chasing England’s mammoth 386 for six.

Jason Roy scored the World Cup’s highest individual score so far as England got back on track with a 106-run victory over Bangladesh in Cardiff. After a surprise defeat by Pakistan following South Africa’s opening 104-run by England, Captain Eoin Morgan encouraged the hosts to “stick to what we do well.”

Roy hit five of the 14 sixes from England, including three in a row instantly before his departure, setting the scene for a daunting total of 386 for six. Besides being a fresh ground record for Sophia Gardens, it also represented the highest ever score for England in the contest, overshadowing the past high by 48 more runs in 2011.

Despite the 121 runs of Shakib Al Hasan, just the third Bangladesh World Cup century after Mahmudullah made two in 2015, the Tigers have never been in the hunt. Bangladesh was eventually sent back for 280 with seven balls to spare on the Sophia Gardens floor where they famously beat Australia in an ODI in 2005.

Stokes and Joe Root missed out but Chris Woakes and Plunkett’s 45-run flurry ensured that there would be no respite to a fatigued attack.

England lost its second wicket in the 32nd over when Root played. Roy pillaged three consecutive sixes off Mehidy Hasan in the 35th over to finish his 150 in 120 shots but Mortaza holed him out in the next ball at an extra cover.

Buttler and Morgan then took on the task with two sixes and a four off Mosaddek Hossain blasting the former. The couple took their team across the 300-mark in the forty-third over.

The duo drowned respectively in the 46th and 47th, while Ben Stokes (6) was also out cheaply. Then Liam Plunkett (27) and Chris Woakes (18) gave some lusty blows and shared 45 off just 17 balls to bring England near the 400 mark.
