José Antonio Reyes, a Spanish soccer star who played for several of Europe’s biggest clubs, including the Premier League’s Arsenal, died in a car crash on Saturday, his former Seville FC club announced. He was just 35 years old.
Just five days before his death, on their eighth anniversary, the wife of former Arsenal and Real Madrid star Jose Antonio Reyes posted a touching photo of the two of them.
The crash occurred before midday when Mr. Reyes was on a road connecting Utrera (his hometown) and Seville, Andalusia’s regional capital. His cousins Jonathan Reyes and Juan Manuel Calderon who was traveling with the player, unfortunately, died as well.
Reyes came to become the youngest ever player in the Spanish League of the Andalusian club through the Seville Academy before embarking on a career that saw him travel around the world and feature for Spain as well.
He was signed by Extremadura at the end of the 2018/19 season most recently.
The Spanish football federation postponed the seven second-division matches that were scheduled to be played on Sunday, because of his death.
