Warner Bros. has announced their new Batman after months of speculation, endless rumors, and tense anticipation.
According to Variety, Actor Robert Pattinson, best known for portraying Edward Cullen in the Twilight movie series, concluded negotiations with the studio to assume the role of the Caped Crusader in the upcoming project “The Batman” by director Matt Reeves.
True to form, the announcement prompted some sharp responses to social media immediately, ranging from “Wow, horrible!! DC comics are swinging and missing again” to “Did you see him in anything not called Twilight? Because dude has real chops.”
Indeed, since exiting the Twilight Saga in 2012, the actor has built an impressive resume that has capped a $ 3.3 billion franchise. He’s certainly been at the center of a contemporary franchise in Twilight Saga before, and he’s used the time after to show his chops as an actor in movies like High Life, starring for Warner Bros in the next film by Christopher Nolan, and just made his debut in the Robert Eggers-directed The Lighthouse in Cannes.
Ben Affleck starred as Batman in two titles directed by Zack Snyder: the 2016 “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and the 2017 “Justice League.” Both films received mixed reviews and were a disappointment for Warner Bros. in their efforts to compete in the superhero realm with Marvel Studios.
Matt Reeves, who was behind the last two “Planet of the Apes” films, will write and direct “The Batman,” which is scheduled for release in June 2021. No other actors involved in the project, or any details on the plot, have been confirmed by Warner Bros.
