We keep hearing about how more and more people now take their work on holiday with them. This is great if you want to work while on holiday but I have only one question on the subject; why on earth would you want to?
Getting away from it all from a couple of weeks might be your only chance in the year to forget about the problems at work and treat yourself to some quality relaxation time. These should be the best days of the year for you and should help you recharge your batteries for the rest of the year. Ah, but you can’t really completely unplug while you are on holiday, can you? Can you?
Get Organised
Let’s start off with a simple question. Will your workplace fall apart if you disappear for a couple of weeks? You probably do a great job but if you are so indispensible that you can’t even switch off for your annual visit to France then something is seriously wrong. For most of us it is simply a question of sorting out our outstanding work, letting people know that we won’t be around for a few days and making sure that everything is up to date. You might need to work some extra hours to do this but when you walk away from your desk you should be confident that you can relax and forget about the place.
Go the Right Place
Getting unplugged doesn’t just mean getting your work up to date though. If you want a trip which lets you disconnect from the world then you need to choose wisely. There are still parts of the world where Wi-Fi and internet cafes are unheard of. What about a remote island, the jungle or high in the mountains? There are luxury hotels which cater for this type of holiday but if your budget is more modest you could go for a more economic choice, as a lot of the world’s cheapest and most interesting destinations are also pretty detached from the modern world as we know it.
Go with the Flow?
Alright, so you are swinging in a hammock safe in the knowledge that the nearest iPhone is hundreds of miles away. The sun is shining and you have no cares in the world and nothing to do. Bit boring, eh? If you are used to living a hectic life then switching off for some time can be tough. If you think this might be an issue for you then you should look at an unplugged holiday with different activities on offer. If you are pretty sure that chilling out is your kind of thing then just go with the flow and take each new day as it comes. Either of these approaches is fine provided you are happy with it.
